Field Marshal Mikhail Kutuzov is best known for being commander-in-chief of the Russian army during the second half of the 1812 campaign. After fighting Napoleon to a bloody stalemate at Borodino, Kutuzov famously decided to abandon Moscow to the enemy, withdrawing his army to the southwest to intercept Napoleon's march southwards.
