Louis Bonaparte was Napoleon's younger brother and protege. In 1806 he became King of Holland, but his efforts to defend the interests of his Dutch kingdom against his brother's efforts to exercise direct control resulted in his relinquishing the crown in 1810. He was married to Napoleon's beloved stepdaughter Hortense de Beauharnais. The couple had a difficult marriage but one of their children eventually became Emperor Napoleon III.
