The Hôtel des Invalides was established during the reign of Louis XIV as a retirement home and hospital for military veterans. The domed Church of the Invalides is an iconic feature of the Parisian skyline and contains the tombs of famous military figures in French history. In 1840, Napoleon's remains were transferred from his original burial place in Saint Helena to a prominent site beneath the dome.
The Invalides now serves as a museum of French military history, and Napoleon's tomb is one of the major attractions.
