A brilliant staff officer and military theoretician, Scharnhorst is best known for reforming the Prussian Army following its disastrous defeat to Napoleon at Jena and Auerstedt in 1806. He served as General Blücher's chief of staff in 1813 but was mortally wounded at the Battle of Lützen.
