Description:
Lucien Bonaparte was Napoleon's brother and a successful politician in his own right who played a crucial role in the Brumaire Coup which saw Napoleon take power in 1799. A few years later Lucien fell out with Napoleon and spent most of his time in Rome pursuing his literary and cultural interests. Unlike his siblings, he was not given any kingdoms by his brother but he rallied Napoleon during the Hundred Days. Read more about Lucien in our blog series on Napoleon's brothers.
The artwork shows a cartoon image of Lucien, characteristically reading a book in civilian dress. The reverse shows Lucien's coat of arms as a French prince of the Hundred Days, based off the Bonaparte family coat of arms.
