Tsar Alexander I ruled the Russian Empire from 1801 to 1825. After being defeated by Napoleon in 1805-07, he entered an alliance with the Emperor of the French at Tilsit in 1807. The breakdown of the relationship resulted in Napoleon's infamous 1812 campaign. Alexander refused to negotiate when Napoleon occupied Moscow, and used the opportunity provided by Napoleon's defeat in 1812 to lead an allied army to Paris in 1814.
