Field Marshal Mikhail Kutuzov is best known for commanding the Russian army in 1812 against Napoleon's invasion. He fought Napoleon to a bloody stalemate at Borodino and took the fateful decision to abandon Moscow to the enemy, withdrawing his army south of Moscow to intercept Napoleon's march.
