history

Description:

Joseph Bonaparte was Napoleon's older brother and an accomplished diplomat and politician who paved his brother's rise to power. Between 1806-08 he ruled as King of Naples, where he proved a popular ruler. In 1808 he was made King of Spain by his brother but struggled to consolidate his rule during the Peninsular War. He relinquished his crown in 1813 and was entrusted with the defence of Paris in 1814. Read more about Joseph in our blog series on Napoleon's brothers.

The artwork shows a cartoon image of Joseph with a wine glass and bottles, a reference to his nickname of 'Pepe Botella' given to him by his Spanish detractors on account of his supposed alcoholism. The reverse shows Joseph's coat of arms as King of Spain.

This mug is part of a collection of cartoon designs featuring Napoleon's brothers by Ibnat Ali, a freelance artist and graphic designer based in Florida.
