The Emperor Napoleon was a keen chess player, though most reliable accounts indicate he was not very good. Here he is playing chess with his minister Prince Talleyrand, the great diplomat who had once served as Bishop of Autun. In 1809 Napoleon invaded Rome and captured the Pope, imprisoning him at Savona and later at Fontainebleau.
