This mug honours Toussaint Louverture, the slave rebellion leader and one of the greatest practitioners of guerilla warfare during the French Revolutionary era.
Toussaint Louverture was a Haitian general and a leading figure of the Haitian Revolution. Born a slave, Toussaint initially allied with Spain against the French authorities on the island of Saint Domingue, before switching sides when the French promised to abolish slavery on the island.
Toussaint had obtained unrivalled political authority in Haiti by the late 1790s, but hostilities with France began after Napoleon's seizure of power in November 1799. First Consul Bonaparte attempted to reconquer the island and sent an expeditionary force under his brother-in-law Charles Leclerc. In the process Louverture was tricked into sailing to France, where he was imprisoned and died a year later in 1803.
