One of the most successful generals of the French Revolutionary Army, Massena played a key role in General Bonaparte's Italian campaigns of 1796-97 and 1800. As a Marshal of the Empire his greatest hour came at the Battle of Wagram, where his corps marched across the face of the enemy line to repel an Austrian flank attack.
