Napoleon Climb Every Mountain Poster

£29.00
Unit price  per
history

This motivational poster is based on one of the most iconic depictions of Napoleon, Jacques Louis-David's General Bonaparte Crossing the Alps. The painting is an idealised depiction of Napoleon crossing the Alps during his Second Italian Campaign of 1800.

An immensely successful piece of Napoleonic propaganda, David painted the names of 'Bonaparte', 'Hannibal' and 'Carolus Magnus' (Charlemagne) onto the rocks in the foreground to associate Napoleon with these great men.

In our version Charlemagne is replaced with Suvorov, the Russian general who had crossed the Alps a year earlier. It makes for less effective French propaganda, but is more historically accurate.
