Description:
This mug featuring a design of two emperor penguins embracing is inspired by a French medallion made to commemorate the Franco-Russian alliance concluded between the Emperor Napoleon and Tsar Alexander I at Tilsit in July 1807. Napoleon wrote to Josephine about the Tsar, "If he were a woman, I would make him my mistress."
Despite their initial friendly relations, the alliance between France and Russia was soon under great strain, and by 1810 both sides anticipated a resumption of hostilities. In June 1812, Napoleon led an army of half a million men to invade Russia, suffering a catastrophic defeat by the end of the year.
