This fine art print features a greyscale design based on George Dawe's painting of Russian general Mikhail Barclay de Tolly in the Winter Palace's Military Gallery of 1812. A Baltic German with Scottish ancestry, Barclay served as Minister of War before Napoleon's invasion before becoming de facto commander in chief of the Russian army. He played a major part in the planning and implementing the famous scorched earth strategy in 1812 before commanding the Russian forces in the War of the Sixth Coalition (1813-14).
