Description:
This best-selling penguin mug is inspired by Antoine-Jean Gros's painting of General Bonaparte at the Bridge of Arcole. The painting depicts a decisive moment in the Battle of Arcole (15-17 November 1796) when the young general seized a standard and led his troops to storm the bridge.
In fact, Bonaparte's crossing of the bridge was a fiction invented by the artist to bolster Napoleon's credentials as a brave and talented general of the French Revolutionary Army - it had the intended effect and helped to make Bonaparte a household name in France.
