The younger brother of Emperor Francis I, Charles was the most talented Austrian commander during the Napoleonic era, distinguishing himself in the French Revolutionary Wars and defeating Napoleon at Aspern-Essling in 1809. Defeat at Wagram caused him to fall out of favour with the Austrian court and he would never take up command again.
